Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
